On their thirteenth birthday, each Beaumont comes into his or her savvy - a magical ability that they will carry with them the rest of their lives. Mississippi Beaumont, or Mibs, can't wait to find out what hers will be. She hopes it will be strong and flashy like her brothers' (one can control the weather, the other electricity) not soft and feminine like her mother (whose gift is perfection). Then, just as she is ready to celebrate her special day, the family gets terrible news - her father has been in a serious car accident. Will Mibs' yet unknown talent get her into trouble - or could it save the day?
This is a sweet little piece of YA fiction from a new author. The zany characters and wild plot twists are worth remembering. However, it bogs down a bit in the middle - I wound up just putting it aside for several weeks. I recommend this to those that enjoy YA fantasy set in the US, and those who would like a story to read to children who will soon be teenagers. Three and a half stars. (In my new system I would give the book a B-.)
