So, today I took our cat Pretzel outside.

I don't think he was ever outside before with any degree of freedom. (He was in a harness attached to a long leash.)

He was really terrified and didn't seem to like it much. So I brought him back inside. He tried to bite me when I took the leash off. And here I was just trying to keep him from getting bored with life! He stares outside and at the babygate all the time, I thought he would like it.

So it goes.

There's a lesson in there somewhere. Maybe, "Be careful what you wish for"? Or, "fantasy is usually better than reality".

More likely, you just don't speak cat.

He would like a birdfeeder just outside the window please. Or a box like my father built for my sister for her 8th floor Yonkers apartment, that hangs out the window but is covered with chicken-wire mesh (except for the solid floor with a towel or a bit of carpet on it), to lay in the sun and the fresh air and look down at the world from an absolutely safe place.

Or a box AND a birdfeeder right outside it.

If you listen to today's Fresh Air on NPR, you'll hear an interview with a woman who finds lost pets and knows better than anyone in the world how scary the outside is for an indoor cat -- there's a lot of useful info, and it's funny, besides. The website has a RealAudio version to listen to at your leisure.
