After a few false starts, I managed to reach my new student over the phone.
Her English is pretty basic. She seems to have a good vocabulary, but not very good comprehension or pronuciation. Once I realized that we weren't communicating successfully, I asked her when her husband would be home. Apparently he speaks better English and had helped her during the skills assessment. He will be home this evening, so I will try calling then. It's harder over the phone since so much of communication is through energy and body language, even when you and the other person both speak a language fluently. I bet we'll do better in person. I hope so at least.
It's a good thing that I'm a fairly patient person overall - I suspect that a lot of patience will be needed.
