I was realizing recently that even though I enjoy reading Terry Pratchett, I haven't read that much of his work. I read three or four books in high school, and then I stopped, but he didn't! So now there is lots and lots of Pratchett I haven't read. And there was lots and lots of Pratchett at my book swap, so I grabbed a few volumes.

Guards! Guards! is the story of the disreputable, disorganized, disliked Night Watch of Ankh-Morpork. It is the story of a secret brotherhood being manipulated by a sinister genius. It is the story of a woman who really, REALLY loves dragons. It is the story of a human raised by dwarves, who will stop at nothing to restore order to the city. And a dragon that is maybe just a bit too big to love.

"Books bend space and time. One reason the owners of those aforesaid little rambling, poky (sic) secondhand bookshops always seem slightly unearthly is that many of them really are, having strayed into this world after taking a wrong turning in their own bookshops in worlds where it is considered commendable business practice to wear carpet slippers all the time and open your shop only when you feel like it." (p 188)

This book made me laugh a lot.
I know there are a lot of people who feel that Pratchett writes insightful social commentary. I'm not so much one of those. I just think he's a funny man. Three stars. Read it on a gloomy day.
