(I picked up the sequel to this book, Moonshine, in a bookstore. I was under the mistaken impression that the main characters were gay. If you see the cover, you'll understand why. But even after I realized that was not true, I was interested enough to get it out of the library and give it a shot.)

Cal and Niko seem like your average scruffy bachelors. Cal slings drinks in a bar, and Niko teaches dojo in the day and bodyguards at night. But the brothers are on the run, from a mystical race of beings known as Grendels. Whenever they see a hint of their pursuers, they leave everything they know and start over in a new place. Still, warriors don't run forever. Eventually, they will turn and fight. And when they do, the bad guys had better watch out.

"Niko had sat on the grass where I'd vanished and he waited. For two days he watched and sat vigil. He didn't give up on me. He never had, not from day one. So I guess it was no surprise he waited.
The surprise was that I actually came back.
On the second night in the same place at almost the same time, I came spilling out of the darkness. Limp and naked, I fell onto the grass, a panting, snarling mess. I'd growled like a rabid wolf when Niko dropped to his knees beside me. I might've taken a chunk out of his arm if I hadn't struggled past layers of confusion and a smothering blanket of disorientation. But in the end I'd recognized him. Took Niko a while longer to return the favor. It'd been only two days for him.
For me it had been two years." p 26

This book is fast-paced and funny. It's also a bit shallow and very masculine in nature. There are very few female characters - four total - the brothers' mom, a love interest for each, and a minor villain. That's it. If you like the TV show Supernatural, or even just the idea of it, you'll probably like this too. Fans of series like The Dresden Files may be disappointed by its simplicity and lack of significant character development, though. Three stars.
