The Host by Stephanie Meyer
Jun. 13th, 2008 11:53 amI have been seeing reviews of this book EVERYWHERE. Therefore, I am putting this review behind a cut - and not posting it to any communities - in case you have been seeing them everywhere too.
Stephanie Meyer is the author of a popular YA series about a teenage girl in love with a vampire. The first book, Twilight, is now being made into a movie. There are currently three books in the series, and a fourth is due to be released in early August. The Host is her first adult novel.
Earth has been invaded. There were no explosions, no alien declarations of conquest. Just a slow replacement of human minds with alien consciousnesses or "souls." Only a few surviving humans remain, and the aliens are doing their best to track them down. Melanie was one such human, until she killed herself to avoid capture. Alas, her best was not good enough - the alien implantation can bring humans back from death. Now she is a mere passenger in her own body, while the alien, called Wanderer, possesses her body and even most of her memories. But Wanderer is moved by the intensity of Melanie's human emotions for her brother Jamie and her boyfriend Jared. Together they begin a journey that will call into question what it means to be human and alien, friend and enemy, insider and outsider.
Wow. I know, I've been seeing these reviews everywhere and I'm sure you have too. But I must be honest. After reading the Twilight series, I was AMAZED at how good this book is. Seriously amazed. I know that some people say this is "science fiction for people who don't like science fiction," and that serious fans would never like it. Well, that is nonsense. I am a serious science fiction fan and I thought it was terrific. Five stars.
