In War Times by Kathleen Ann Goonan
May. 26th, 2008 09:08 amThis book was on many of the "best SF of 2007" lists that I looked at over the winter. Loosely speaking, it's the memoir of a serviceman named Sam Dance. The principle topics of the book are war, quantum theory, jazz, romance, and alternate universes. Interspersed with the narrative are engaging excerpts from Goonan's father's diaries of his life as a serviceman.
This book is a slow, thoughtful read. It is depressing in places, but the overall tone is hopeful. I enjoy the way that the lives of the characters intersect after the war is over. It also made me want to listen to old jazz records. Three stars.
