I really enjoy Charlaine Harris as a mystery writer, but I don't enjoy her wildly popular occult mysteries, featuring Sookie Stackhouse. I read the first book, I've read some of her short stories in that series - they just don't work for me. So, I was delighted to find <i>Poppy Done to Death</i>in a used bookstore. What's even better? It's one in a very long series, the Aurora Teagarden sequence. What's better than that? It was still a really good read and not full of in-jokes or hard to follow, even though it was maybe ninth in the series. Nor did it seem formulaic. I feel that's pretty unusual. As with other cozy mysteries, you are as interested in the lives of the characters and what happens in their relationships as you are in the identity of the murderer. The characters themselves are believably complex and not too nicey-nice. I am going to gobble this series right up going NUM NUM NUM. Three and a half stars - I don't think I'll need to read this particular book again, but I can't wait for the rest. I am also going to do a more dedicated search of Harris's non-Sookie offerings.
