I have lost track of exactly which book this is in the Gaslight series. The midwife Sarah Brandt is called to attend a birth at the home of prosperous restaurant owners in Little Italy. All is not well in the family, however, and the next day, when Sarah returns, she discovers that the new mother has been murdered. Soon, her friend Frank Malloy is brought in on the case.

At this stage in the series, Thompson has pretty much given up on the idea that Brandt still performs her midwifery duties where they do NOT pertain to murder investigations. She doesn't attend a single birth in this book other than the one that pulls her into the new case. Maybe she doesn't think it's important to the reader anymore? Well, it's important to me. Hints about Aggie's past and the murder of Sarah's husband continue to be dropped. Hopefully at least one of those plotlines will get resolved in the next book, because I'm getting a bit bored with them. Also, it was obvious to me from the beginning of the book who the murderer was, and why. Still, for a period mystery series, the Gaslight series continues to do pretty well. Three stars.
