This was a recommendation from [livejournal.com profile] bloodykerri, if I recall correctly. The sheltered, motherless Francesca gets the shock of her life when her father dies suddenly, leaving her penniless and vulnerable. She's saved from ruin (and I mean that in the Victorian sense) by a cousin she's never met - scion of her mother's estranged family. It was a terrific beginning. Unfortunately, though, the book actually gets less exciting from that point. I didn't find it terribly memorable - the best sign of that is that I didn't remember to write this review until a week after I finished it. Three stars. I don't regret reading it but it doesn't make me want to run out and read more by the author. It's by the same author as The Buried Pyramid and those other books, but I can't remember which one is the pen name and which one is the real name. Ah well.
