only-okay fantasy
Mar. 25th, 2008 10:30 amThis week I finished The Firebird by Mercedes Lackey and The Buried Pyramid by Jane Linskold.
I read The Firebird because I wasn't sure if I had actually read it before, or not. I'm still not really sure. Maybe that makes some testament to its lack of memorableness. Still, it passed the time. Three stars. I liked The Firebird's Egg much better.
The Buried Pyramid is an odd book. It's YA, and maybe a little too simple. There was nothing really unpredictable about it - except the ending, which was far away from the rest of the book. Mostly it's historical fiction - then suddenly in the last hundred pages it becomes a fantasy with Egyptian gods as characters. I would normally consider that a spoiler. Unfortunately, it's not, because the excerpt on the first page of the book is from those last hundred pages. Out of a book over four hundred pages long! I just hate that, although I doubt it was the author's fault. The beginning of the book was great and then it just fell down. Three stars.
