reading question from tootlelulu

Are books a passion of yours or are they part of your professional life as well? How much do you read a day?

The answer to your first question is "yes." Books are a passion of mine, and they have been since a very early age. Most of the books you see me posting about here are books I read for pleasure and personal enlightenment. They are also a part of my professional life - I read books about birth, for my primary job, and I also do some freelance editing. I read specific things for that, of course, and also reading many different works in general makes me a better editor and proofreader.

I read for several hours almost every day. I read at home in my favorite reading chair in the dining room, I read on the couch, I read on the bus, train, and plane, I read while I'm walking, I read while I'm waiting for my dinner and my dinner partner is in the bathroom. About the only places I don't read are in the car (makes my sick, although I do rent audiobooks for long trips) and in bed (makes it hard to sleep).

I've seen a statistic that the average American watches FOUR HOURS of television every day. I definitely don't watch television that much - if I watch three episodes of something, fast-forwarding through the commercials, it's a big TV day for me. More normal for me is to watch nothing, or one episode of something. But I'm pretty sure I read four hours a day, an hour or two in the morning, an hour or two at night, and a lot of short intervals in between. Whenever someone tells me they don't have time to read, I wonder how much television they watch. I'm not against television but I like books much better. They engage my mind more, and you can take them anywhere easily, and they don't need a power source.

I don't discriminate in my reading material. I read fantasy, science fiction, memoirs, modern and Victorian literature, mysteries, nonfiction on lots of topics, and even some romance. My all-time favorite authors are Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, authors of the cult favorite Liaden series. Some other favorites are Lawrence Block, Charles de Lint, Sharon Shinn, and Mercedes Lackey. I get ideas of what to read from friends, from websites like booksense.com and paperbackswap, from the book review communities [livejournal.com profile] bookshare and [livejournal.com profile] bookish, and from browsing at libraries and used book stores. I can give just about anybody a book recommendation that they'll enjoy, it's one of my secret superpowers.

Do you like to read, [livejournal.com profile] tootlelulu? What sort of books do you enjoy?

I love to read but don't spend anywhere near the time you do at it.

Currently I am reading 'Interred with their Bones" It's a 'da Vinci Code' for Shakespeare. The Elizabethan facts are fun, but there are too many in a short period of time to comfortably keep them straight. It's a page turner though. I like YA books, some best sellers and whatever strikes my fancy: 'I Capture the Castle' and 'Cold Comfort Farm" are among my favorites. I've added a few you've written about on my 'must read list'. I don't read too much non-fiction. I do for work, but I've started two books dealing loosely with our 'life style' and even though I am very interested in the subject matter, I never seem to finish the books.
