This week I finished Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs and 3rd Degree by James Patterson and Andrew Gross.

Deja Dead is the first in a series featuring Temperance Brennan, an American forensic anthropologist who works in Quebec. In general, I liked this book. The plot was fast-paced and I wondered what was going to happen next. However, the main character is so impulsive and reckless that, at least to me, she comes off as a bit dumb. She almost never calls for backup or even tells people her plans to investigate out on the street. That bugged me, and detracted from my enjoyment of the book. I like my heroines to be brave AND smart. I don't think I'll follow the rest of the series. Still, it was a good read. Three stars. Fans of Patricia Cornwall or CSI will be entertained.

As for 3rd Degree - Patterson, Patterson, what were you thinking? This book sucked, and I guess I'm not the only one who thought you needed a better ghostwriter - since a new coauthor is on the cover for following books in this series. I'll give you a quote: "He had gone through so many names over the years, changing them, moving on whenever he felt people getting too close. Names were fungible, anyway - as easy to change as making a new driver's license. What had remained constant was a belief that burned deeply inside his soul. That he was doing something here that was very important. That he owed it to people close to his heart, people who had died for a cause. But the scary thing - none of that was true. Because (he) believed in nothing but the hate burning inside of him." p 129
It's not so bad it's good. It's just bad. I didn't hate the book - I finished it. But it really wasn't very good. The second half of the plot seemed to be a knockoff from a previous book. Two stars, and I think I'll give the series a rest. A disappointment, especially since the second one was so good.
