snugglekitty: (evil book)

This is the third installment in the duo's Prince Roger series, featuring a ne'er-do-well prince stranded on a hostile planet with only his Marines and his chief of staff for company. Weber and Ringo specialize in military-themed space opera - heavy on battles, low on character depth, medium on witty banter. I almost didn't read it. When I discovered that there would be a third book set on the planet of Marduk, I almost gave up right there. Seriously, how much technological superiority over an alien species and everything working exactly the same as it does on Earth can one girl take? But this time (possibly because I'm sick) I was able to let go of my frustrations with the writing and my inability to remember who most of the characters were and simply focus on the story. Rousing endorsement, huh? I know. But the story is fun, especially this installment. I also enjoyed the addition of a significant alien female character, who kicks butt. Three stars. I'm really looking forward to reading the last book, which has gotten great reviews, and finally putting the series to bed. Maybe after that's done, I'll finally tackle At All Costs, the conclusion to Weber's Honor Harrington series, which I still haven't read.
