in praise of white chocolate

Today's joyful discovery is that some kinds of white chocolate contain no chocolate at all.

So I bought myself a big ol' white chocolate Easter bunny. And after I eat lunch, I am going to consume a significant part of it with glee.

That is all.

huh? No cocoa butter? White cocolate is 100% cocoa butter so I'm wondering what fat they choose.

I thought most white chocolate had no real chocolate in it? I'd think the ones that do are the exception. 'Course, they're full of milk so I can't have 'em, but it's good if you can.

this page implies that since there is no standard for what can be called "white chocolate" (since it isn't officially chocolate), some places replace some or all of the cocoa butter with other vegetable fats.

lady_anemone, what is the basis for which chocolate you can/can't have?

there is no formal defintion of "white chocolate" because the FDA doesn't classify it as chocolate at all. so no, it contains no cocoa solids, but it does contain cocoa butter, so it depends on what your issue with "chocolate" is -- if you're allergic to cocoa butter, then most white chocolate will also be bad.

but most white chocolate i'm seen does NOT have dairy in it, so check your labels -- you might be able to eat it :)

I'm allergic to cocoa beans. So, anything that is cocoa-derived, I can't have. That includes anything with cocoa butter. But, according to this page, I will be able to eat some low-quality white chocolate because it uses other fat sources. Well, it's a lot better than the chocolate that I've been eating for the past two years (none!), so I'm not about to complain!
