My first completed book in 2008 is Night Watch by Sarah Waters. This morning, I had been thinking about returning it to the library uncompleted - I just didn't really care much about the characters and was having difficulty keeping the timeline straight. That's what comes of having a reverse narrative, I guess. The book starts in 1947, and the characters are reflecting back on their lives in 1944. Then it goes back to 1944, and they're reflecting back on 1941. The book concludes with a short section set in 1941. Freakin' confusing, if you ask me. I had to go back and look at the beginning of the book to remember where the characters had wound up at the end and learn the significance of some cryptic remarks. But, I figured it would only take a few hours to finish it, and I was right. (Of course, all told, it took me about six months to read this book.) I guess I'm glad I finished it, but I don't feel I can recommend it. If you like Water, reread Tipping the Velvet instead. Two stars only.

Currently reading: Archangel Blues by Eluki bes Shahar, 2012 by Daniel Pinchbeck. I tried starting Point of Hopes this morning but had a hard time getting into it. I'll try again in earnest tomorrow, when I won't be hungover, not even a little bit.
