This week I finished Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews and the anthology Women of War edited by Tanya Huff and Alexander Potter.

Magic Bites is another in the spate of recent dark fantasy offerings. I thought it was really quite excellent. Better than the Walker Papers or the Mercy Thompson series. Definitely better than the latter Kim Harrison books, too. I won't give too much away, but the main character is a female mercenary and the setting is a postapocalyptic Atlanta, which experiences tides of magic and technology. When the magic is working the technology doesn't, and vice versa, but the tides aren't predictable. I thought this book was very original and interesting. She definitely left room for a sequel, and I hope there's at least one, if not more. Four stars.

Women of War was a paperbackswap.com book. I was intrigued by it, since it seemed to have both sci fi and fantasy stories, and it also has a fantastic cover, imo. My favorite stories were "Fighting Chance" by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, "Painted Child of Earth" by Rosemary Edghill, "She's Such a Nasty Morsel" by Julie Czerneda, "Shin-Gi-Tai" by Robin Wayne Bailey, and "The Last Hand of War" by Jana Paniccia. The fact that it was hard to pick just five favorites is a great sign. I kept stopping while I was reading it, because I liked the stories so much I wanted time to think about them. Also four stars.
