Last week, I read Basket Case by Carl Hiaasen. I didn't think this book was anywhere near as funny as Skinny Dip. SD was just down-and-out hilarious. This book was darker humor. Maybe I would have found it more amusing if I was in the journalism business, but it's interesting that Hiaasen made ecological crisis funnier than being a reporter. But it did still make me laugh out loud a few times. Three stars.

Yesterday, I gobbled up Little Earthquakes, the third offering by up-and-comer Jennifer Weiner, author of Good in Bed and In Her Shoes. This book follows four young-ish women who have had, or are having, significant experiences of pregnancy and motherhood. It took me a while to realize it, but BOY is this book down on husbands! The one husband who's a nice guy is offscreen for most of the book. The other husbands are cheaters, slackers, and spineless. Yeek. This resulted in some brief weird resentment towards [livejournal.com profile] mrpet until I realized what was going on. I also felt that the resolutions at the end of the book were a bit contrived. Everything doesn't always turn out okay. Every problem is not just a misinterpretation of the other person's brokenness. I liked it, but not as much as the other two. Three stars.
