On Friday night, I attended the showing of Ftf at the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival at the Museum of Fine Arts. Accompanying me were [livejournal.com profile] mrpet, [livejournal.com profile] 7j, and a lot of queer women.

The film was mostly a documentary, although the "female to femme support group" looked very staged from my perspective, and I think was intended as comic relief. Some of the issues discussed were coming out as femme, femininity and feminism, burlesque and drag, femme visibility, and pushup bras. :) They also spent some time talking about dyke culture in the nineties, when plaid flannel and crewcuts were considered obligatory apparel, and dressing as a femme would get you all kinds of criticism. I remember those days well, actually - that was definitely what my college experience was like.

I wish they had talked more about butch/femme, femme/femme, femme and trans issues. It would also have been interesting to hear more about what brought people into embracing a femme identity. But I thought the film was very good, and I would definitely recommend it.

Next Friday, I'm going to see the women's shorts, as part of the same festival.
