This Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] mrpet asked me if I wanted to have a picnic with him at the Arnold Arboretum. "Great!" I said. "I can't wait!"

But when we got there, there was a sign on the gate which said "Open Studios" and about ten gazillion cars. So, I suggested we head over to Forest Hills instead. This way, too, we can go back to the Arboretum when the leaves are changing. I love it when we go to Forest Hills. Why, you might ask? Well, for one thing I love cemetaries. For another thing, I love outdoor art installations.

So, we drove to Forest Hills. We had a nice walk, and a picnic by the pond. We went to the first ten art spots or so. It was not stuffed with people the way the Arboretum was, which was another nice feature. Then we were a little bit chilly and a little bit tired, so we headed home.

We both agreed that we preferred last year's installation, on the Four Elements. This one was on Home, and many of the installations were very similar to each other, although a few were neat. My favorite was the one with antique doorknockers.

We used to live on Tower st., which dead-ends with a pedestrian gate into Forest Hills. I went for many walks there with my daughter K. when I was a stay-at-home dad. We were there for the naming and release of the first resident swans there in 100 years.
It is a beautiful place. The trees and landscaping and uncrowdedness make it a great spot in Boston for a quiet calming walk.
But the Arboretum, though it meant crossing the noise and confusion of Forest Hills Station from our house, that has been a favorite of mine since the first year I arrived in Boston. I walked there carrying her every single day in the winter and spring after she was born, and nearly every day of that year. There is a small section there where the Firs and Rhododendrons make it look just like the Oregon coast.
