Just before leaving town this weekend, I finished His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik. It was her first novel, and it's like Honor Harrington, if Honor Harrington was a nobleman with a naval career during the Napoleonic Wars and they were using dragons as the Air Force. So so good. OMG so good. Just when I thought there simply couldn't be anything new coming out of the dragon genre that would be worth reading, this knocked me off my feet. Five stars, and I can't wait to read the sequels.
Over the weekend, I read Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell. Basically, this book is about the power of the human unconscious. Wow. Any book that includes anecdotes about art fraud, police brutality, and speed dating without being an anthology is going to have to be fascinating. Unless, you know, it's one of those conspiracy theory books printed on the really cheap paper. I loved it and I wish it was twice as long as it was. I wish it included more about how to harness YOUR unconscious (in a non-New Age way). Five stars for book 103.
Those are the kind of books that make you want to go out and read a ton more books. That makes me so happy when it happens. Currently in the pile: The Happy Hook-up, Specials, The Privilege of the Sword.
