finally, a new knitting project

Recently, I've been having difficulty getting going with knitting projects. I'm not sure why. I'll do a gauge swatch, make some pattern alterations, get everything planned out... and then not make the project.
However, on Friday, I finally got started with something new. I am making this hat for my darling sister. She had fallen in love with some yarn that I frogged from a raspberry sweater I got at Goodwill. It's mostly wool, with some angora. So I offered to make her something, and she said she wanted a hat.
I am enjoying the project so far - I think I have a chance of learning some things from it, in addition to just having fun with it. As
7j astutely commented, I like knitting things that stretch my current set of skills. In this project, I'm planning to try cabling without a cable needle, and I'm also going to learn to pick up stitches, which I've never done before. So far, I'm about halfway done with the cabled hatband. Once that's complete, I'll be picking up the stitches, and then the rest of it should be pretty straightforward.
Hopefully this will be the beginning of a lot more knitting. I feel better about time spent knitting than, say, doing sudoku. I also have a big pile of promised projects, including a hat for baby N, a hat for
ayalanya, wristwarmers for
mrpet and myself, and a squid purse for
starkeymonster. Maybe this will get me inspired to work on some of them.
My other recent crafty project was to alter a nightshirt I got for myself. It was going great until I lost the second remnant I was sewing the collar with. *sigh* At this point, I think I'm going to give it to
mrpet to finish fixing.
