snugglekitty: (shawl)

I posted this on the now-defunct crochet community earlier this year. I thought I would re-post it, so that I would not lose it, and all of you would get to still have it.

I posted a while back about having trouble with this pattern:

> I sat down with my friend [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine and we figured it
> out. I am posting this in the hopes it will be helpful to someone else.

> The first thing to know is that, although it is not specified in the
> written instructions, when you dc in a previous dc in this pattern, you
> do so in the stitch, not in the space between the stitches.

> The next thing to know is that although it is not included in the pattern
> after Row 4, you should be doing a V-stitch in the third chain of the
> previous row at the end of every row. Also, right after that when
> you turn the corner and it says "dc in ch-1 space," it does NOT mean the
> ch-1 of your last V-stitch, but the ch-1 you made just BEFORE your last
> V-stitch. In other words, you skip a stitch.

> Now then - the pattern of increases is this:

> First increase row: Add V-stitch between sets of three dc stitches - you
> do not also double-crochet in those stitches Second increase row: In the
> ch-1 space of the V-stitch, you will now (dc, ch 2, dc) Third increase
> row: In the ch-2 space, you will now (2dc, ch1, 2dc) Fourth increase row:
> In the ch-2 space, you will now (2dc, ch2, 2dc) Fifth increase row: In
> the ch-2 space, you will now (3dc, ch2, 3dc)

> There are two sets of increases going on at once. What I describe as the
> fifth increase row also incorporates the first increase row, of adding
> V-stitches. This is not incorrect in the pattern, but the author never
> writes "This is the increase sequence, this is what you need to pay
> special attention to."

> Whenever you are increasing, after the first increase row, you should
> have a chain stitch on each side of your forming shell. You can see this
> from the pictures in the pattern, but again, it's not specified in the
> text.

> Also, when you are increasing, you should not be dc'ing in the forming
> shell, only in the chain stitch. You need to skip the stitches. It tells
> you to do so only through Row 6 but it needs to be done throughout.

> I hope this will be helpful to someone else struggling with the pattern.
> Once we figured out what was going on, it went very quickly and made a
> lovely shawl. I made mine out of two-ply medium bulky yarn, wool wrapped
> in cotton. I used half mauve and half eggplant, with shiny light pink
> highlights. It came out very well.
