This is the third in Fred Vargas' Commissionaire Adamsberg series. The mystery series was a big hit in France and is now taking on in the US and other countries. I was blown away by the first two - Have Mercy on Us All and Seeking Whom He May Devour. The third did not quite live up to their promise.
Adamsberg's nemesis is back from the dead. "What nemesis?" you say? Well, the secret one, of course, the one we knew nothing about. The pursuit of this man has forever divided Adamsberg from his fellow men. This, we are led to believe, is why he's always been so odd. Now this killer is back, but no one believes Adamsberg. Something about this plot rang a bit false to me.
My favorite parts of the book happened in Quebec. Vargas' style continues to be very enjoyable. I like the ongoing evolution of Adamsberg's relationships with others. But it just wasn't as good as the previous two. Three stars.
