Reading questions from the [livejournal.com profile] altfriday5:

1. Do you read for recreation?
Hells yes.

2. What sorts of things do you read? Fiction? Nonfiction? What category or genre? Long pieces? Short? Books? Magazines? Web pages?
I read fiction - regular fiction, sci fi, fantasy, and mystery. I usually read books, but I read anthologies of short stories or novellas occaisionally. I read nonfiction - stuff about sex, knitting, birth, and spirituality, mostly.
On the web, right now my favorite blog to read is Mistress Mattisse. I used to read Real Live Preacher Man but I haven't in a while. I also occaisionally read CSI: Miami slash fanfic, especially by BJ Jones,*.
I also do some freelance editing, for barter and cash, but that's only recreational by accident.

3. Does your mood (day-to-day), circumstance (week-to-week or month-to-month) or lifestyle (year-to-year) influence the reading choices you make?
Yes. If I'm in a bad mood, I don't read books that I think will upset me further. If I'm in a good mood, I like challenges both emotional and intellectual. I also have noticed that I tend to read more nonfiction in the summer, which makes sense because I have more energy then. I am generally interested in reading about my hobbies and interests, so I will read about whatever I am doing a lot of in a particular year, whether it be drawing, cooking, or knitting.

4. What function does reading hold for you? Escape? Learning? Companionship? Imaginative voyage? Other?
I think that the creation of a mental space that only I inhabit, even if I'm on a crowded bus, is central to my enjoyment of reading.

5. What, if anything, that you've read in the last year or so stands out as particularly excellent reading?
Well, my "best books of 2007" posts are now linked on the left side of my journal, if anybody who reads this could possibly have missed them. In the new year, I've already read three five-star books - Operating Instructions by Anne Lamott, Holy Fire by Bruce Sterling, and Strategic Sex edited by D. Travers Scott. Very promising, I feel. I hope I'll read lots more books as good this year.

The Questioner says: Don't forget your links!
