new icon explanation

This icon was inspired by an insomniac conversation with starkeymonster. I believe it was pursuant to a car alarm going off outside, and the question of "What should we throw?"

I'd also like to take this opportunity to share with you all a few pictures I took a few nights ago. Sorry, no, they're not of my new office space, for those who have been asking.

simple pleasures are the best

Last night for dinner:

- delicious guacamole homemade from wonderfully fresh, ripe avocadoes by mrpet
- mild chunky salsa
- organic blue corn tortilla chips

We had planned on tacos, but neither of us was really hungry, so we just did the chips and stuff.... YUM. We'll have the tacos tonight, maybe.

Also, we watched CSI and I started changing colors on the socks that I'm making. First lesson - no more black sock toes. I had no idea it would be such a problem.

Life is good. (Isn't it nice that I'm made happy so easily?)

[books] Matilda and You Slay Me

Yesterday I reread Matilda by Roald Dahl. For those of you who haven't experienced this delight, it's an extremely funny children's book about a really smart little girl in a very dysfunctional environment. I enjoyed reading it again, very very much. The illustrations by Quentin Blake are also just terrific. In retrospect, it becomes very obvious why this was one of my favorite books when I was a child. Matilda's parents and my parents... have some similarities. Although my father is certainly not a crooked used-car dealer.

I think this is going to inspire me to reread more Roald Dahl. I remember liking Danny, the Champion of the World when I first read it at age ten or so, but I felt like I didn't understand everything that was going on. Maybe that would be different now.

I've also been reading You Slay Me by Katie Macalister. There are some "supernatural romance" books that I like. Unfortunately, they are very few and far between, because I find characters that refuse to accept responsibility for themselves and their actions to be incredibly annoying, and most of the main female characters in the genre fall into that category. I liked the beginning of the book - it doesn't take itself too seriously, which is another big problem with supernatural romances - but now the main character is acting like a twit. "Well sure I'll agree to be the dragon's mate, it's only a dream! And why not summon a demon? That will clear my problems right up!" I'm not sure whether I'm going to finish it. I usually don't get past the first twenty pages of these books, so it's actually a good sign that I'm about a third of the way through.

I also have a big stack of non-fiction to work through, but that hasn't happened yet.
