Batman Begins
Jul. 13th, 2005 08:40 amOn Sunday, I saw Batman Begins with
mrpet,
7j, and the boyfriend of 7j.
I really enjoyed this movie. Michael Caine was the star - everyone else was just in supporting roles, and that includes Batman himself! The love interest of Batman, played by Katie Holmes, was happily un-wimpy compared to anyone but Catwoman. The villains, I thought, were more convincing, and spookier, then any other Batman villains I've ever seen. Morgan Freeman also played a terrific role which looked like a lot of fun.
I also liked that the movie had some good lines that were repeated without being explained - just points to ponder. My favorites were, "Why do we fall? We fall so we can learn to pick ourselves up," and "It's not who you are inside, it's your actions that define you."
And plot-wise, I loved the meeting of the board of directors of Wayne Corporation towards the end of the movie. The total reversal was just... yummy.
Several people have agreed with me, though, that there is one place where the plot falls down. Most people do not respond to panic by attacking the source of their panic. They freeze, or they try to hide or run away. Also, people who live with danger a lot of the time (like cops, and folks who live in dangerous areas) learn to pretend that they're not panicked and either 1) move past their fear to do their jobs or 2) go about their lives "under the radar" without attracting the notice of perceived predators. Having panicked people attacking in an angry mob just didn't make a lot of sense. It would have been more reasonable to say, "And then, when they're all panicked, we're sending in shock troops," or "We're giving the crime syndicates the antidote, so they'll be the only ones able to act" then just "and people will tear things apart because they're scared!"
On the other hand, I thought the movie did a good job of dealing with trauma, showing that it isn't something that magically goes away, even if you do get an antidote.
Anyhow, I liked it enough that I want to go out and re-watch the rest of the Batman movies, which is definitely a good sign. Does anybody else think this would be fun? Want to make a movie night of it? Let me know.
