For making sense of Buddhism as the Buddha taught it, there's no book I like better than this one, which just rocks. Most writing about Buddhism (especially by Americans) seems to me to be more misconception than truth. (I'm being gentle here.) Hagen is a blessed exception.

Buddhism, the real deal, is stark and scary and beautiful and mind-blowing. It's damned hard to find, though.
