The Impossible Takes a Little While, The Safe-Keeper's Secret, and Minion
I've finished three books in the past few days, so I thought I'd write about them. One non-fiction inspiration thing, one deep-ish fantasy, and one trashy summer book that was better than I expected - something for everybody!
The Impossible Takes a Little While: A Citizen's Guide to Hope in a Time of Fear, I've written about a few times already. It was simply amazing. If you think of yourself as apathetic, apolitical, or not an activist, read this book. If you think of yourself as a discouraged activist, read this book. Wow. Several times it brought a lump to my throat. Many times I found it deeply, deeply moving and inspiring. If you are out there thinking, "What difference can I really make in the world?" then read this book.

7j. I love Shinn and I hadn't even heard of this book. I loved it. If you like YA fantasy, you should read it immediately. It also had some really interesting ideas in it about secrets and wishes. I was able to see some of the plot twists coming up, but that was okay, I think that had a lot to do with my having read Shinn's work a lot and having a sense of how her narratives work. Also, this makes me want to re-read more Samaria books, which is happy.
Minion by LA Banks was something I saw on amazon. This reads kind of like a Buffy spin-off, and maybe it is. But I liked it a lot, and having the main character be a young, black hip-hop artist with secrets in her past was pretty awesome. It ended on a cliffhanger, so you might not want to start it unless you're willing to try doing the whole series.
I'm actually not finding it as predictable as I expected. I think it'll be good going forward. It's usually a good clue when the normally-silent librarian says "I read this and it was really good."
